Garnett gets day of rest
By Mike Mazzeo
Brooklyn Nets center Kevin Garnett will not play Saturday night against the Toronto Raptors, the team announced.
Garnett is getting a rest day. Rookie Mason Plumlee will make his first career start in Garnett’s place.
Garnett, 37, played a season-high 36 minutes in Friday night’s double-overtime victory over the Miami Heat.
Plumlee, the team’s first-round pick out of Duke in the 2013 NBA Draft, has been out of the rotation recently, playing just one minute in the last four games combined.
Garnett has played in 32 of the team’s first 35 games this season, averaging 22.3 minutes per game. The veteran is averaging career-lows across the board, though he’s averaged 12.5 points and 7.5 rebounds on 66.7 percent shooting in his last two games.
The Nets (15-21) have won a season-high five games in a row.
Given that many of their players had played so many minutes Friday night, they elected to recall forward Tornike Shengelia from their NBDL affiliate in Springfield, Mass.
