W2W4: Nets vs. Mavs
By Mike Mazzeo
The Brooklyn Nets will look to continue their winning ways in 2014 when they take on the Dallas Mavericks on Friday night at Barclays Center. Here’s what we’ll be watching for:
CAN THEY STAY HOT? The Nets are 8-1 in the new year and have won three in a row. They are 6-0 when starting Shaun Livingston, Alan Anderson, Joe Johnson, Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett. Deron Williams is expected to come off the bench for a third straight game as he continues to work his way back from ankle injuries.
HELLO, OLD FRIENDS: Nets coach Jason Kidd used to play in Dallas for Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle. They won a championship in 2011. This will be their first time coaching against one another. Vince Carter used to play with Kidd in New Jersey. Jason Terry is a former Maverick. Dallas courted D-Will in the summer of 2012 before he elected to re-sign in Brooklyn. Williams is from Dallas originally. He averaged 27.5 points in two meetings against Dallas last season. Mavericks owner Mark Cuban has made plenty of headlines about the Nets in recent years.
DIRK’S BACK: Dirk Nowitzki (21.1 points per game) will play after sitting out Wednesday’s loss to the Toronto Raptors (rest). Monta Ellis (20.0 points per game, six assists per game, 46.2 percent from the field) is having an excellent season for the Mavericks (25-19).
