Starting Five: Allen showing up Pierce, KG
By Mike Mazzeo
Maybe Kevin Garnett should try to get a hold of Ray Allen's phone number and give him a call to say, "Hey Ray, it’s Kevin. Paul Pierce and I were just wondering if you could stop hitting so many shots and beating us. Thanks! Bye.”
OK, so that’s not going to happen. But seriously, KG and Pierce might want to do something, because Allen is killing their Brooklyn Nets.
In Game 1, Allen scored 19 points against his former Boston Celtics teammates. In Game, 2, he scored 13. The Heat have a commanding 2-0 lead on the Nets as the series shifts back to Brooklyn for Games 3 and 4.
Could it be that the best former Celtic in this series is Allen?
It’s looking that way.
Garnett has made just two field goals in the series, while Pierce has scored a total of 21 points -- including just eight in Game 1.
The Nets hung tough with the Heat into the fourth quarter on Thursday night.
But for the second straight game, a missed layup proved to be the start of their downfall.
With the Nets down 82-77, Garnett missed from point-blank range, and Allen followed with a 3-pointer that gave the Heat an eight-point lead.
Garnett was upset when Allen left the Celtics to join the Heat following the 2011-12 season.
Allen confirmed to the Florida Sun-Sentinel that the two haven’t spoken in the two years since.
Question: Are you surprised that Allen has been the best former Celtic in this series? Let us know in the comments section below.
In case you missed it: The Nets’ backs are against the wall, while Deron Williams failed to show up.
Stat to know: The Heat closed Game 2 on a 15-5 run over the final 6 1/2 minutes. The Nets went 1-for-7 from the field during that span, while the Heat went 6-for-10 and 3-for-4 from 3-point range.
Up next: Game 3 on Saturday night at Barclays Center.
