D-Will says Melo is having an MVP season
By Mike Mazzeo
Knicks forward Carmelo Anthony is having a career season, and Nets point guard Deron Williams has certainly taken notice.
"He's having an MVP year across the board," said D-Will, a Team USA teammate of Anthony's over the summer. "He was definitely focused for the Olympics, and I think it just carried over."
The Knicks are 15-5 and sit atop the Eastern Conference standings. Anthony ranks third in the NBA in scoring at 26.8 points per game, and his 56.9 true shooting percentage -- a measure of shooting efficiency that takes into account field goals, 3-point field goals and free throws -- is a career-high, according to ESPN Stats & Information.
Is Melo playing with a chip on his shoulder?
"Probably," D-Will said. "He hasn't struggled in the playoffs (24.9 ppg), but his teams have tended to struggle in the playoffs (17-38 record). He's disappointed in that, knowing the competitor that he is, and wants to lead that team to a championship. And like I said, he's playing at the highest level right now."
D-Will is 12-9 in his career against Melo.
"Melo is one of those players where he's going to get his points," D-Will said. "I've gone up against Melo (21 times). I don't know how many times we've stopped Melo. I don't think it's possible."
