Brooklyn Nets: Kelly Olynyk

W2W4: Nets on NBA draft night

June, 27, 2013

The Brooklyn Nets will host the NBA draft for the first time, on Thursday at Barclays Center. They're also participating, of course. The first round begins at 7:30 p.m. on ESPN; here's what we'll be watching for:

When do they pick? The Nets hold the 22nd pick in the first round.

What players of note have been picked at that spot in the past 10 years? Kenneth Faried (2011), Courtney Lee (2008), Jared Dudley (2007), Jarrett Jack (2005).

Interesting fact: The Nets picked 22nd in 2003 (Zoran Planinic), 2004 (Viktor Khryapa, rights traded to Portland) and 2006 (Marcus Williams).

Any trade rumors swirling? MarShon Brooks to the Timberwolves in exchange for the No. 26 is the hot rumor right now. "Decent chance it gets done on draft [night] ... yes,"'s Chad Ford wrote in his chat with fans Wednesday.

Longtime Nets beat writer Fred Kerber tweeted that GM Billy King told him there's a "60 percent chance" the team will move up. As The Bergen (N.J.) Record points out, King has made 18 draft-day trades involving picks in the 12 years he has been an NBA GM.

What are the team's needs? The Nets are seeking some athleticism and shooting. Position-wise, they could use help on the wing, depth in the frontcourt and a backup point guard.

What are the industry's main mock drafts projecting? As of Thursday morning:'s Chad Ford: Louisville center Gorgui Dieng Dieng Duke center Mason Plumlee

Who else is an intriguing possibility? PF Kelly Olynyk, SF Reggie Bullock, SG Tim Hardaway Jr., SG Allen Crabbe, SG Tony Snell, PG Isaiah Canaan.

If the Nets do trade up, Ford says they could be interested in Russian SF Sergey Karasev, who is projected to go 13th to the Mavericks.

Mock draft: Nets take Kelly Olynyk

June, 25, 2013
Here are the prospects the Nets will look at in their final pre-draft workout on Wednesday.

Jio Fontan, PG, USC
Durand Scott, PG, Miami
Deshaun Thomas, SF, Ohio St.
Demetrius Conger, SF, St. Bonaventure
AJ Matthews, C/PF, Farmingdale St.
Gorgui Dieng, C/PF, Louisville

Chad Ford’s latest mock draft has the Nets taking 7-footer Kelly Olynyk out of Gonzaga.

Writes Ford:

Analysis: Olynyk might have one of the largest ranges of anyone in the draft. He'll get looks as high as No. 11 to the Sixers and No. 12 to the Thunder, but he also could work his way down here. Gorgui Dieng and Tony Snell are other options for the Nets at 22.
