St. John's survived against Rutgers on Wednesday night at Carnesecca Arena.

In other local action on Wednesday night:
Seton Hall was stifled at West Virginia, losing 56-44. The Pirates shot just 29.5 percent from the field (18-for-61), and not a single player was in double figures. Jeff Robinson scored nine points. Jeremy Hazell had five, on 1-for-8 shooting, 0-for-6 from downtown.
Hofstra, which started out 8-1 in the CAA, has now lost three straight, after an 87-68 defeat at George Mason. Charles Jenkins had 22 points in a losing cause.
Fordham is now 0-8 in the A-10, after losing at Rhode Island, 72-52. Chris Gaston and Alberto Estwick had 18 apiece for Fordham.
