North Carolina sophomore guard Dexter Strickland hopes Michael Jordan is a man of his word.
MJ told the Tar Heels before the NCAA tournament that if they advanced to the Final Four, he would give the entire team Air Jordan 11 Retro “Cool Greys.” It would even be legal under NCAA Rules, since Jordan is the official shoe provider for UNC.
UNC will face Kentucky in the East Regional final on Sunday afternoon at the Prudential Center.
Strickland, the New Jersey native, told me on Saturday that he really wants the Jordans. He even posted a picture of the shoes on his Twitter handle: @dstrick01.
The whole incident started because Jordan was upset that heralded freshman Harrison Barnes was wearing “Kobe Bryants” instead of his signature line.
"If I see you in them Kobe Bryants, man, I'm gonna cut you right off," Jordan told Barnes, albeit jokingly, in a video posted by rivals.com. "I don't care if your feet kill you, you're gonna wear them Jordans."
However, Jordan, who now owns the Charlotte Bobcats, told Barnes that he could wear "whatever shoes he wanted" as long as the team won. Of course, he did point out that got “killed” by Duke in the ACC tournament championship.
They haven’t lost since.
In 1982, Jordan, then a freshman, led the Tar Heels to the national championship.
