Long Island University, which won the Northeast Conference and went to the NCAA tournament a season ago, has been picked to defend its NEC championship by the conference's head coaches.

LIU, which returns 10 players (including three starters) under coach Jim Ferry, received 10 of the 12 first-place votes in the NEC preseason coaches poll, released earlier this week. Robert Morris received the other two first-place votes.

Wagner, under second-year coach Dan Hurley, was picked to finish fourth. Monmouth was picked 10th, St. Francis (NY) 11th and Fairleigh Dickinson 12th.

Junior forwards Julian Boyd and Jamal Olasewere of LIU were named to the preseason All-NEC team, along with Wagner senior guard Tyler Murray.
