Steve Lavin's staff at St. John's won't be finalized until he knows if Mike Dunlap will leave the West Coast for the Big Apple.

Dunlap, who was expected to be Lavin's top X's and O's man on the Red Storm bench is waiting to see what happens with the vacancies at Oregon and Colorado according to a source with knowledge of the situation. Former Colorado head coach Jeff Bzdelik was recently hired to replace Dino Gaudio at Wake Forest.

If Dunlap remains in the picture with St. John's, Lavin would be left with three candidates for only two positions. Also in the mix are Golden State Warriors assistant Rico Hines and former Seton Hall assistant Scott Adubato. Tony Chiles has already been officially hired by Lavin as an assistant.

Lavin had expressed an interest to Hines about taking over the role of Director of Basketball Operations but Hines reportedly makes too much annually in the NBA to not make the jump to Jamaica without being an assistant. Rice head coach Mo Hicks was reportedly the front-runner for the position.

The addition of Adubato would give Lavin instant credibility in the metropolitan area. At Seton Hall, Adubato made the Pirates major players in the Garden State, going toe to toe with Duke for St. Patrick's point guard Kyrie Irving until the end, when Irving ultimately chose the Blue Devils.

Adubato is well connected to the guard heavy Class of 2011 that features a plethora of guards from Jersey such as Sterling Gibbs (Seton Hall Prep), Tyrone Johnson (Plainfield), and Myles Mack (Paterson Catholic).
