WHAT IT MEANS: No. 4 Pittsburgh won the 2K Sports Coaches vs. Cancer Classic at Madison Square Garden, defeating No. 22 Texas 68-66. Pitt goes to 5-0 on the season, with a couple of impressive wins here at MSG, where the Panthers are now 26-11 in their past 37 games. Texas drops to 3-1, but has to leave the Big Apple relatively happy -- earning a split in two games against top 25 teams, after defeating No. 16 Illinois last night.
TURNING IT ON: Pittsburgh guard Ashton Gibbs -- named a third-team preseason All-American by Blue Ribbon -- had a quiet first half Friday night with only five points. But he revved it up in the second 20 minutes, at one point scoring 10 consecutive Pitt points. Gibbs also hit the biggest shot of the game -- a late trey that extended Pitt's lead from 63-62 to 66-62. Gibbs finished with 24 points, 19 coming in the second half.
SCORING MACHINE: One night after he poured in 25 points against Illinos, Texas sophomore swingman Jordan Hamilton went off for 28 points against Pitt, including shooting 5-for-7 from 3-point range. After back-to-back performances like that at The World's Most Famous Arena, Hamilton's star is on the rise.
BIG MAN ON CAMPUS: Texas freshman forward Tristan Thompson, formerly of St. Benedict's Prep in Newark, N.J., electrified the crowd Thursday night with 20 points, seven rebounds and five blocks -- but he wasn't quite as spectacular Friday night. He finished with just 11 points and seven rebounds, although he did have four blocked shots.
WHAT'S NEXT: Pittsburgh next hosts Robert Morris on Tuesday -- and the Panthers will be back at the Garden to play St. John's on Feb. 19. Texas will host Sam Houston State on Tuesday.
