Notre Dame-Army: The Irish lead big

NEW YORK -- As the fourth quarter gets under way here in the Bronx, Notre Dame leads Army, 27-3. Some fans among the record-breaking crowd of 54,251 here at the new Yankee Stadium are heading out -- the outcome is no longer in doubt, and it's getting pretty darn cold out here!

(The press box at Yankee Stadium isn't covered, so us media folk are getting to experience the chill, too.

A couple other observations from the game so far:

  • Notre Dame got embarrassed by Navy at the nearby Meadowlands four weeks ago, but the Fighting Irish certainly came to play tonight. Offensively, defensively, on special teams -- it's been total domination here.

  • Early indications are the first college football game at Yankee Stadium was a success. The field looked great, the stands were packed -- we didn't get the most exciting game, but it's still been fun to watch.

  • Best play of the night? The Notre Dame marching band's rendition of "New York, New York" at halftime --performed while making the shape of the "I Love New York" logo.
