NEW YORK -- A quick postgame take on the NIT Season Tip-Off championship game at Madison Square Garden:
WHAT IT MEANS: No. 24 Tennessee upset No. 7 Villanova 78-68 to win the NIT Season Tip-Off. For Tennessee (5-0), it's an extremely impressive victory, especially considering the team has been going through so much turmoil because of coach Bruce Pearl. For Villanova (5-1), it's a very disappointing loss, coming at a place they're much more familiar with, and with several New York-area players on its roster.
HOT AND COLD: Villanova guard Corey Fisher, a Bronx native, had an excellent game in the semifinals against VCU, pouring in 26 points. But, rather stunningly, Fisher had just three points against Tennessee, on 1-for-10 shooting, before fouling out.
SPREADING IT AROUND: Tennessee was no one-man band -- four starters scored in double figures on Friday, and the fifth -- point guard Melvin Goins -- had nine points. Junior swingman Scotty Hopson had 18 points in the final, after scoring 18 in the semifinals, and was named the tournament's most outstanding player.
HOME BOYS DO GOOD: Tennessee freshman Tobias Harris, who hails from Long Island, was named to the all-tournament team after his 15 points and nine rebounds in the championship game. Senior Brian Williams, who's from the Bronx, also played well, with 12 points and seven rebounds.
WHAT'S NEXT: Tennessee will host Middle Tennesse on Tuesday. Villanova has a week off, before playing St. Joseph's next Friday night.
