Rutgers to compete in Cancun Challenge
By Kieran Darcy
In addition to hosting LSU on Dec. 3 as part of the Big East/SEC Challenge, Rutgers will also participate in the Triple Crown Cancun Challenge next season, the school announced on Thursday.
As part of that tournament, Rutgers will host Sacred Heart at the RAC on Thursday, Nov. 17, and Hampton on Nov. 20. Then the Scarlet Knights will travel to Cancun, where they will face Illinois State on Nov. 22, and either Illinois or Richmond on Nov. 23, the day before Thanksgiving.
"These tournaments not only upgrade our non-conference schedule, they also provide intriguing matchups for our fan base to enjoy," said Rutgers coach Mike Rice. "It's very exciting to welcome a SEC opponent with the storied history of LSU into our building. In the Cancun Challenge, we have the opportunity to play an NCAA tournament team at home in Hampton before meeting an opponent that advanced in this year's tournament in either Illinois or Richmond. We hope to have many of our die-hard fans with us in Cancun over the Thanksgiving holiday to support us.
"As we continue to build our program, the goal is to gradually improve the quality of our non-league schedule so that we develop a better résumé for postseason consideration."
