Four local teams set sights on tourney
By Kieran Darcy
St. John's, barring a miracle run in next week's Big East tournament, isn't going to the NCAA tournament this season.
But the Big Apple still could have as many as three teams to cheer for in the Big Dance.
LIU Brooklyn (19-13, 12-6) is the closest to a bid. The Blackbirds will host Mount St. Mary's at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Northeast Conference championship game. LIU, the No. 3 seed, won at No. 2 seed Wagner on Saturday, while No. 5 seed Mount St. Mary's upset No. 1 seed Robert Morris. The Blackbirds are looking for their third consecutive NEC tournament title and NCAA tournament slot.
Both Iona (18-13, 11-7) and Manhattan (13-17, 9-9) play in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference semifinals on Sunday in Springfield, Mass. Iona, the No. 4 seed, faces No. 1 seed Niagra at 2 p.m. Manhattan, the No. 6 seed, faces No. 7 seed Fairfield at 4:30 p.m. Both games can be watched via ESPN3.
Stony Brook (24-6, 14-2), the America East regular season champion, plays No. 4 seed Albany in the America East semifinals in Albany, N.Y. at 7 p.m. Sunday. That game can also be watched via ESPN3.
