Tennessee-VCU at MSG -- halftime report
By Kieran Darcy
Three observations from the first half of No. 24 Tennessee vs. Virginia Commonwealth at Madison Square Garden -- Tennessee leads 33-32 at the break:
Both teams are playing very hard, but not having great success in the half-court offense. Tennessee shot 13-for-33 from the field (39.4 percent); VCU was an abysmal 9-for 38 (23.7 percent), including 3-for-18 from 3-point range (16.7 percent) -- but the Rams were 11-for-15 from the foul line.
Long Island native Tobias Harris -- already named the SEC Freshman of the Week -- led the Volunteers with 10 points in the first half, on 5-for-11 from the field.
VCU point guard Joey Rodriguez -- who came in averaging 18.3 points and 10.3 assists per game (tops in the nation) -- had a rough half, with just two points and one assist, shooting 0-for-4 from the field. And he left for the locker room late in the first half with what looked to be an ankle injury.
