One of the worst-kept secrets in college basketball is finally a done deal: former Purdue coach Gene Keady has joined Steve Lavin's staff at St. John's.

Here's the story, from ESPN colleague Andy Katz.

Keady will serve as Special Assistant/Advisor to the Head Coach, and he will be on the bench for games.

Lavin worked for Keady at Purdue from 1988-1991, before moving on to UCLA. Keady was the head coach at Purdue from 1980-2005, and in that time the Boilermakers made the postseason 22 times and won six Big Ten titles.

It's not official yet, but Gene Keady -- the legendary former Purdue coach -- will be coming to New York to help out Steve Lavin at St. John's.

Here's the story, from my ESPN colleague, Dana O'Neil.

Lavin once served as an assistant under Keady, and considers Keady a great mentor.

This is yet another recruiting coup by Lavin. Keady won't be able to coach on the floor or recruit, but he should still serve as a big help to Lavin, as a sounding board.
