Linebacker Mark Herzlich will miss his fifth straight game Sunday against the Cowboys but is hoping that he can help the Giants if they reach the playoffs. The linebacker has a high ankle sprain and also a little chip on his bone that will not require surgery.

"Hopefully we get the win and I'll be able to help contribute going forward," Herzlich said on Friday afternoon.

The rookie was injured on Nov. 28 against the Saints on a play in which he said he came on a blitz and was cut by the running back and an offensive lineman fell on him. He thought he would be fine but the injury kept bothering him and it turned out to be worse than he thought and has sidelined him for the last four games and Sunday's contest against Dallas.

The linebacker had started the last two games he played at linebacker and had six tackles and one quarterback hit this season. He also had sick tackles on special teams.

"It's disappointing and frustrating," Herzlich said. "I guess it's part of it and the first week you watch practice and are like, why am I watching practice? The thing you realize if you have to get yourself better and for me it was not going to be a two-week thing. I kind of had to wait till it got where I could actually play."

Herzlich said he would start running on Monday, as it will be five weeks since the injury, and he was not allowed to do any pounding on his foot until then. If everything goes well for him and the team, he could suit up again this season.

"That's our hope and the hope the whole time," Herzlich said of the potential playoff game being an option for him.
