New York Giants safety Kenny Phillips says he will be ready to play against the Carolina Panthers next month.
On Wednesday, Phillips backed that up with his play in practice. Superman, as his fellow defensive backs call him, is indeed making his way back to form.
The safety didn’t just make his first interception of training camp but he had two in practice.
“I got lucky,” Phillips said with a big grin.
His first interception came on the right sideline when he chased down the ball and picked off backup quarterback Dominic Randolph.
Then Phillips ended practice when he had an interception drop into his hands off a deflection at the line of scrimmage during a two-minute drill.
After playing in just two games last season and undergoing microfracture knee surgery, Phillips is making progress in his return. He played on six plays against the Steelers in his preseason debut last Saturday and should at least double that workload on Saturday in Baltimore against the Ravens.
“His timing is probably off a little bit,” Tom Coughlin said. “But that’s because he doesn’t get a lot of reps (to this point).”
THE (FORMER) EAGLE HAS ALMOST LANDED
Coughlin said he hopes to play OL Shawn Andrews some against Baltimore.
“He’s coming,” Coughlin said. “He’s had a lot thrown at him and of course he came in at a point in camp when we had a lot of stuff for him. But he definitely feels better and is getting used to his pads. He’s been away from that for a while. He’s in two positions. But he’s responding well.”
Coughlin said he did not know yet whether he wanted to play Andrews at left guard or left tackle although he has taken the majority of his limited practice reps at guard.
Andrews has not played since appearing in two games during the 2008 season before missing time with a back injury.
WE TALKIN' 'BOUT PRACTICE?
WR Hakeem Nicks returned some kickoffs but Coughlin said it was scout team work… WR Mario Manningham, who had a good practice on Wednesday and looked as fast as he has, returned some punts with CB Aaron Ross out… DE Dave Tollefson saw some snaps at linebacker and defensive tackle in practice as Perry Fewell continues to utilize his players at different positions… LB Gerris Wilkinson saw some limited reps with the first team at outside linebacker.
