Jacobs cheered loudly at pep rally

There were no boos for Brandon Jacobs on this day. Only cheers.

In what could potentially be one of his last moments as a Giant, the running back was cheered loudly during and after the Giants' pep rally Tuesday at MetLife Stadium. Jacobs had an up-and-down season that saw him get booed at times and has a $500,00 roster bonus due in March that the Giants could choose not to pay.

The running back got a loud ovation when he was introduced to the crowd at the pep rally and then received even louder cheers when he ran did a full lap around the stadium with the Lombardi Trophy and let the fans touch the hardware.

"They deserve it as much as anybody," Jacobs said. "They hung in the whole time when people rode us down. The fans hung in there and persevered through all the stuff with us. Now we're here."

He added about the crowd: "Beautiful crowd, no questions about it. It felt like a Sunday here."

Jacobs, in the third year of a four-year deal, restructured his contract before the season so the Giants could allow the team to re-sign Ahmad Bradshaw. Jacobs had one of the worst years of his career, rushing for 571 yards and 3.8 yards per carry.

Before the season, Jacobs told Men's Fitness magazine he was unhappy with his role and did not believe he would be back with Big Blue in 2012. As the season commenced and he struggled, he started hearing booing from the fans.

In November, after a loss to the Eagles in which he rushed 12 times for 21 yards, the running back criticized the fans for booing him. The Giants managed to just rush for 17 yards on 29 carries in that loss to the Eagles.

"That's the best thing they do here is to boo," Jacobs said back then. "I'm not worried about that. I've been hearing that for seven years."

Jacobs told reporters on Monday that he wants to remain with the Giants. He said on Sunday that he did not feel his situation is up in the air as the team knows what they have to do if they want to re-sign him, as he has that roster bonus due in March.

There's plenty of time before the Giants will have to make that decision but for the two-time Super Bowl champion, he will get to remember the cheers he received from the fans on this chilly day in February.

"This is the greatest accomplishment that you can get as an athlete for any level of the sport," Jacobs said of the title. "We are the Super Bowl champions."
