This is the final installment in a nine-part series that will analyze the Giants' needs, position by position, in the upcoming draft.
Depth chart: CB Corey Webster, CB Terrell Thomas, CB Prince Amukamara, CB Antwaun Molden, CB Bruce Johnson, CB Brian Witherspoon, CB Michael Coe, CB Justin Tryon, CB Brandon Bing, S Antrel Rolle, S Kenny Phillips, S Tyler Sash, S Stevie Brown, S Chris Horton, S Chad Jones.
Not under contract: S Deon Grant, CB Will Blackmon, S Derrick Martin.
Scouting report: The Giants made their most moves -– mostly minor ones -- in free agency adding to the secondary. They re-signed Thomas and hope that the cornerback returns to the form he was at prior to tearing his ACL in the preseason last year. Thomas is projected as the team’s starter opposite Webster. Amukamara should improve in his second season after missing much of his rookie season due to a broken foot. But Amukamara is recovering from having an injection to help the foot heal. He is expected to be ready for camp and see snaps as the third corner with Aaron Ross’ departure in free agency.
The Giants signed Patriots free agent Molden and added two free agent safeties in Brown and Horton for depth and potential help on special teams. They also re-signed Johnson, Coe and Tryon. But there is uncertainty surrounding several members of the secondary. Thomas, Johnson, Coe, Witherspoon and Tryon are all returning from season-ending injuries.
At safety, Rolle and Phillips return but the popular veteran Grant remains unsigned. While the Giants could potentially bring him back later, the team likes last year’s sixth-round pick Sash. Also, with the addition of LB Keith Rivers, Perry Fewell might not have to play three safeties as much this season. Jones is attempting to return from a gruesome car accident that nearly cost him his life and his left leg in 2010. The Giants have to consider it a bonus if Jones, who is inspiring teammates with his comeback, is able to play.
The Last Time: The last time the Giants drafted a cornerback was in 2011 when they took Amukamara in the first round out of Nebraska. They also selected a safety in the sixth round with Sash from Iowa.
Potential targets: The Giants have been looking at several defensive backs and it makes sense. The Giants actually only have six secondary players under contract past this coming season (Webster, Thomas, Amukamara, Rolle, Sash and Jones). Phillips’ deal is up after this season and GM Jerry Reese always keeps an eye toward the future. With so many players returning from injuries, the Giants could draft a corner or safety this weekend.
If Notre Dame S Harrison Smith is there at 32, the Giants might have to take a long look. They like Alabama CB Dre Kirkpatrick, who visited with the Giants but even he said Reese would have to trade up to get him. North Alabama CB Janoris Jenkins could have too much baggage for the Giants' taste. Arizona State CB Omar Bolden has been in to visit the Giants twice according to ProFootballTalk.com. According to the Newark Star-Ledger, the Giants brought in Iowa CB Shaun Prater, McNeese State DB Janzen Jackson, Texas A&M CB Terrence Frederick and Kentucky S Winston Guy. Coastal Carolina CB Josh Norman and Duke S Matt Daniels also visited with the Giants according to reports.
Need Rating (On a scale of 1-10 with 10 being of highest importance): 5.
