The New York Giants are selecting last in the first round, with the 32nd pick, which means nobody has any clue who will be there or what will transpire Thursday night.
The one thing we do know is that the Super Bowl champs don't always draft what most observers think they need, but rather take the best player on their board. So while everyone knows the Giants can use another running back, offensive tackle, wide receiver, tight end and defensive back, the Giants don't draft for need. Would it really shock you if they took another defensive end or defensive lineman early?
Here's my second stab –- more like throwing darts while blindfolded –- at a Giants mock draft. Last year, I got one out of eight picks right, and I was lucky to get that by having linebacker Jacquian Williams as one of their sixth-round picks.
While doing this mock, I just felt a lot of the guys I wanted for the Giants weren’t going to be there when they picked toward the end of each round. So I tried to pick based on that. Could I have picked guys I wanted for them in each round? Yes. But I tried to project who was going to go ahead of them in each round and what would be available that late. It’s impossible to predict, though.
Personally, I wouldn’t mind seeing the Giants take a running back, offensive lineman and wide receiver somewhere in the first four rounds. But I also know the Giants don’t always draft for need.
ROUND 1 (32) -- WR Rueben Randle, LSU. If guys like North Carolina DE Quinton Coples, Syracuse DE Chandler Jones, Illinois DE Whitney Mercilus, Alabama CB Dre Kirkpatrick and Alabama LB Dont’a Hightower don't unexpectedly fall to 32, the Giants could focus on wide receiver. Georgia Tech's Stephen Hill likely will not be there, but LSU's Randle very well could be. Indications are they will pass on Stanford TE Coby Fleener if he's there and look to grab a defensive player or potential third wide receiver. Right tackle is a possibility, as well. In the ESPN "SportsCenter" mock draft on Wednesday, I selected Clemson DE Andre Branch since Hightower, Hill and Randle were already off the board. So we'll see how I do either way.
ROUND 2 (63) -- S Brandon Taylor, LSU. Yes, I know, I got two consecutive picks from the same school, but the Giants can use a safety for the future with Kenny Phillips entering the final year of his contract. I know the Giants can use a RB right here, but I go for defensive value instead.
ROUND 3 (94) -- DT Mike Martin, Michigan. The Giants like guys from the Big Ten and always want to be strong on the defensive line. I was tempted to take a RB here, but I'm all-in and brainwashed by the Reese philosophy of drafting the best player available, regardless of position.
ROUND 4 (127) -- CB Josh Norman, Coastal Carolina. With several cornerbacks returning from season-ending injuries, the Giants add a defensive back for insurance and the future.
ROUND 4 (131 compensatory) -- T Donald Stephenson, Oklahoma. The Giants add another big tackle (6-foot-5, 312 pounds) to develop for the future.
ROUND 5 (Traded pick in Keith Rivers deal)
ROUND 6 (201) -- CB Omar Bolden, Arizona State. The Giants reportedly met with Bolden twice, perhaps to see the condition of his right knee. Bolden tore his ACL twice but appears to have solid skills and can return on special teams.
ROUND 7 (239) -- RB Terrance Ganaway, Baylor. The Giants lost Brandon Jacobs, but Ganaway (5-11, 239) would give them some size in the backfield again. Not going to lie, though -- I was tempted to take a defensive end since Osi Umenyiora has an uncertain future, Mathias Kiwanuka is entering the last year of his deal, and Dave Tollefson is gone.
