Domenik Hixon wasn't the only new addition to the first unit at the Giants' OTA on Wednesday.
James Brewer got reps at left tackle with the first team in place of Will Beatty, who was out with a back issue.
Brewer said he has been rotating reps at right and left tackle during OTAs. It's clear the Giants want to see what they have in Brewer.
"We need him to develop," head coach Tom Coughlin said. "We need him to come along and to improve, and we need him to understand the work ethic that those guys with lunch buckets come to the office with every day. He has a little ways to go there, but he has made progress."
"The offensive line is a concern," offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride said. "Some of those guys that hasn't been needed to be depended upon have got to show up for us to have a chance. Otherwise, it doesn't matter how good your quarterback and receivers are if your quarterback is flat on his back."
The starting offensive line could be Beatty at left tackle, Kevin Boothe at left guard, David Baas at center, Chris Snee at right guard and David Diehl at right tackle.
LINEBACKER OBSERVATIONS: Mathias Kiwanuka showed off his coverage skills by knocking down a short pass intended for Rueben Randle, to the delight of Perry Fewell. The Giants had Kiwanuka, Chase Blackburn and Michael Boley work with the first team.
The second-team linebackers were comprised of Keith Rivers, Mark Herzlich and Jacquian Williams. Fewell said he plans to move Rivers around in different positions, including middle linebacker. Fewell also liked what he saw from Herzlich on Wednesday at middle linebacker.
Fewell gushed about undrafted free-agent linebacker Jake Muasau. The rookie from Georgia State made enough of an impression at rookie camp that the Giants used him as the third-string middle linebacker on Wednesday with Greg Jones playing third-string outside linebacker. Fewell said he wants to experiment a bit and see what Jones can do at outside linebacker in addition to his normal position in the middle.
OTA BITS: Safety Steve Brown had a nice interception off Ryan Perrilloux. ... Rookie cornerback Jayron Hosley was step-for-step with Randle on a deep pass attempt that was overthrown. ... Perrilloux impressed quarterbacks coach Sean Ryan by throwing a dart while on the move toward his left. ... Cornerback Brandon Bing slipped and was on the grass in pain for a few moments before getting up and resuming practice. He said he is fine. ... Linebacker Clint Sintim did some work on the side as he continues to rehab from a knee injury suffered last preseason. ... Adrian Tracy is listed as a linebacker, but he was used at right defensive end quite a bit on Wednesday. Fewell said the team is looking at him at defensive end moving forward.
