EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- During the second day of minicamp, the defense looked strong for the majority of practice.
Cornerback Justin Tryon picked off a David Carr pass. And rookie cornerback Jayron Hosley and safety Steve Brown dropped two would-be interceptions while safety Antrel Rolle tipped another pass off Eli Manning.
But the offense finished with a flurry as Carr moved the ball in a two-minute drill with the second-team offense, repeatedly finding Ramses Barden and Jerrel Jernigan over the middle and underneath for passes to move the chains.
Barden and Jernigan are looking to show what they can do as the Giants search for a third receiver. Domenik Hixon has started in place of the injured Hakeem Nicks alongside Victor Cruz and rookie Rueben Randle made some nice catches during Tuesday's practice and has flashed glimpses of his potential. Barden made a pair of diving/sliding catches, although Tom Coughlin told him not to dive. Jernigan showed nice speed across the middle.
It should be an interesting camp battle at wide receiver.
TAKING IT EASY: Corey Webster, Clint Sintim, Tyler Sash, Shaun Rogers, Chris Canty, Markus Kuhn and Travis Beckum did not practice.
Terrell Thomas continues to take things easy as he makes it back from last year's knee surgery. Tryon and Michael Coe started at cornerback for Thomas and Webster.
Defensive end Osi Umenyiora participated in practice after taking Tuesday easy to rest. The Giants used some of their NASCAR package with Umenyiora, Justin Tuck, Jason Pierre-Paul and Mathias Kiwanuka on the front line.
Defensive end Adrian Tracy appeared to injure either his left elbow or shoulder and had his injury examined before returning and finishing practice. He also looked like he would have had a potential sack in a non-contact snap coming off the left edge as well.
QUICK OBSERVATIONS: Rookie running back David Wilson continues to show an explosive burst of speed at the line of scrimmage. He is quick and shifty. We'll have to see how he continues to progress and pick up the offense and blocking schemes in training camp ... Tight end Bear Pascoe made a nice catch down the middle from Manning ... The punt return game showed some improvement on Wednesday as Hosley and Jernigan appeared to break a couple of nice returns in the non-contact practice. Coughlin said he will go with a returner-by-committee approach with Hixon, Jernigan, Cruz, Hosley and Randle in the mix ... Sean Locklear practiced with the first team at left tackle as Will Beatty continues to take it easy with a back issue ... Rookie free agent safety Will Hill drew praise from safeties coach Dave Merritt for blowing up a running play in the backfield and tagging Da'Rel Scott before getting past the line of scrimmage.
