Tom Coughlin obviously is not thrilled that a video of Jason Pierre-Paul dunking Prince Amukamara into an ice tub has gone viral.
As a rookie last season, Amukamara was the target of a number of pranks. Apparently, he still is. Perhaps it has something to do with Prince rebelling a bit against rookie hazing last season. It also could have something to do with the veterans trying to get Amukamara to develop an edge or just be "one of the guys." It's hard to know fully, not being in the locker room all the time since we only get a glimpse every now and then into how the locker room really is.
Last season, Prince told the Newark Star-Ledger that he didn't always take the hazing quietly.
"Sometimes I think they take it overboard just because they're vets they get to be mean about it and tell you what to do," Amukamara said in that interview. "I just kind of flipped the whole script and kind of had fun with it with being insubordinate a little bit just so it can be more playful, and I think that that whole vibe just creates a great locker room atmosphere."
In the video, JPP looks like he is trying to prove a point to Prince, as if he was putting Amukamara in his place. Again, I'm just guessing. We will talk to the players on Monday.
I don't think Pierre-Paul meant the act in a malicious way and clearly the other players in the video all appeared to be enjoying the moment. Prince, of course, looked none too happy. He never resisted or put up a fight. And fortunately he did not get hurt.
But he has mentioned how things like this help the locker room chemistry. While I don't condone hazing, I do think players tend to bond in their own way and, again, I don't think JPP, or any of the other veterans, hates Amukamara. They know how pivotal he will be to the team's success this season with Terrell Thomas on the mend.
My take: No harm. JPP was treating Prince as big brothers sometimes treat little brothers -- albeit JPP is a big brother who is 6-foot-5 and weighs 278 pounds.
