After every Giants game, we'll be doing a "Stock Watch" containing three Giants things that are on the way up, and three Giants things that are headed downhill at the moment.
As some of you may know, I am a big old-school rap fan, so I am naming my "streaking" and "slumping" categories after two old-school classics: "Smooth Operator" by Big Daddy Kane, and "The Gas Face" by 3rd Bass.
Here are three players streaking and three units slumping after the loss to the Cowboys:
SMOOTH OPERATOR
The Black Unicorn: Martellus Bennett's Giants debut wasn't too shabby. He had four catches for 40 yards and a late touchdown. He was unable to haul in one third-down pass from Eli Manning, but otherwise showed he can be the tight end threat and red zone option the Giants were hoping for.
Keith Rivers: The outside linebacker started for Michael Boley (hamstring), and was very active until he was slowed by a hamstring injury himself. Rivers had seven tackles, including one for a loss, and might've had more if not for the injury. Boley also looked good as he returned an interception 51 yards.
David Wilson, kick returner: The first-round draft pick was benched on offense for fumbling his second carry, but he looked good enough as a kick returner that Tom Coughlin pointed it out as one of the few things he was pleased with in the opener.
THE GAS FACE
The defense: The Giants' D gave up plays of 48, 40, 38 and 34 yards to the Dallas offense. DeMarco Murray rushed for 131 yards, and Kevin Ogletree had eight catches for 114 yards and two touchdowns. The cornerback position is decimated by injuries, and the Giants will need this mini-break to patch things up defensively before facing Tampa Bay.
The offensive line: Outside of a 33-yard run late by Ahmad Bradshaw, the offensive line didn't get as much push or open as many holes in the running game as it wanted to. Also, Manning was sacked three times.
The wide receivers: This is one of the team's biggest strengths, and it will be a tough day anytime Victor Cruz and Hakeem Nicks aren't making big plays. Cruz had six catches for 58 yards but had too many drops, and Nicks is still making his way back from offseason foot surgery. Cruz might've had a touchdown if not for what appeared to be a missed pass interference call in the end zone. It won't be long before the receivers bounce back.
Tell us what you liked and didn't like from the season opener below.
