Tom Coughlin sure didn't sound like the coach of a team with a 2 1/2-game division lead on Monday.
A day after his Giants escaped Dallas with a 29-24 win, Coughlin had a pretty long list of things his team needed to work on. The most pressing? That seemed to be the lack of red zone production.
The Giants defense forced six turnovers on Sunday, giving the offense plenty of chances to put points on the board.
One of those turnovers resulted in a defensive touchdown (an INT runback by Jason Pierre-Paul). The other five turned into three field goals and a touchdown.
That's not good enough, especially considering that, on average, the Giants started on their own 48 after the turnovers.
They finished the afternoon just 1-for-4 in the red zone (inside the opponent's 20-yard line).
"That’s the Achilles heel for us right now. Punching the ball in the end zone when we do get into the (red) zone. We haven’t done a very good job of that," Coughlin said.
On the season, the Giants have scored touchdowns on just 44 percent of their red zone possessions, the sixth-worst percentage in the league.
Coughlin grew frustrated when asked what his team can do this to turn things around inside the opponents' 20.
"We’ve addressed it forever," he said. "We work it the same way, every week. We study, we work hard, we think we have a nice play and we think we can run with things. You saw it yesterday."
