Torain joins the Giants right before they face his former team, the Redskins. Torain was with the Redskins last season and he also has played for the Broncos. Torain adds size and some power. Lumpkin has played for the Packers, Buccaneers and Seahawks. He can catch the ball out of the backfield with 41 receptions for 291 yards in 2011 for Tampa Bay.
The Giants needed a running back after placing Andre Brown on the injured reserve/designated to return list following a broken fibula suffered against Green Bay on Sunday night. Torain and Lumpkin will provide depth behind Ahmad Bradshaw and David Wilson.
How these moves impact Wilson's playing time remains to be seen. During the bye week, the coaching staff said Wilson still had to earn trust in order to play. But Tom Coughlin said this week that Wilson's time has come and Wilson is eager to prove to his coaches that he can get the job done on Monday night.
The Giants waived offensive lineman Selvish Capers to make room on the roster. They also terminated the contract of running back Joe Martinek off the practice squad and may add Capers back to the practice squad.
Looking to add some depth at running back, the New York Giants signed free agent backs Ryan Torain and Kregg Lumpkin.A source confirmed Torain and Lumpkin worked out for the Giants along with free agent Ryan Grant and Cadillac Williams, as first reported by the Newark Star-Ledger.
