EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Giants defensive tackle Linval Joseph was fined $7,875 for his stomp on Redskins lineman Will Montgomery, according to an NFL spokesperson. Montgomery was fined $10,000 for kicking Joseph, which led to the stomp.
In the third quarter of Monday night's game, Joseph started pulling Montgomery out of a pileup following a fumble by Redskins running back Alfred Morris. As Joseph was pulling him out, Montgomery kicked Joseph. Joseph then went to stomp on Montgomery, but it appeared that he did not squarely land his foot on Montgomery. Joseph was penalized for unnecessary roughness, as was Redskins lineman Kory Lichtensteiger.
"It took me everything not to hit him back because I didn't want to hurt the team," Joseph said Monday.
Montgomery told the Washington Times he plans to appeal the fine.
"I think I have to protect myself," Montgomery said. “If the guy is dragging me across the ground and potentially twisting my ankle or whatever else, I’m not going to let the guy drag me across the ground. And I can’t push him, obviously, because I’m on the ground, so I used my leg to get him off me.”
