Yes, of course we did a May, post-draft NFL Power Rankings on ESPN.com. We know you love 'em, and we wouldn't want to let you down. They're right here, if you want to take a look. And if you do, you'll see that the New York Giants came in at No. 19, four spots up from where they finished the 2013 season.
No. 19 is pretty good for an NFC East team these days. We have the Cowboys down at No. 22, the Redskins at No. 28 and only the defending-champion Eagles up in the top 10.
Me, I put the Giants at No. 22, with the Cowboys at 19 and the Redskins at 23. I'm not as down on the division as most people seem to be, though I'm not exactly high on it either. My ranking of the Giants tied Jamison Hensley's for the lowest among our six Power Rankings voters. Kevin Seifert's No. 18 was the highest, so there's a pretty good consensus on the range in which they should fall.
Could they move higher than this in 2014? Of course they could. But while no team has been more active since the offseason began, there's ample reason for pessimism as well. First of all, I think they had a lot more work to do than a lot of people realized when the offseason began -- an amount too large to fit into a single offseason. Second, I think history has shown us that free agency, especially on a scale as large as the one on which the Giants operated this spring, is not effective as a short-term fix. I think the Giants are going to have to start the 2014 season in the bottom half of these rankings and work their way up if they can.
