The view from OTA

May, 21, 2010
Just some quick observations and notes from today’s OTA.

From what we saw, Jonathan Goff worked with first team at middle linebacker alongside Clint Sintim and Michael Boley.

Head coach Tom Coughlin says it is still early and linebackers are being rotated.

TE Travis Beckum had a few catches in 11-on-11 and 7-on-7 drills.

• • •

WR Ramses Barden made a leaping catch and held on while falling down in 7-on-7.

• • •

Giants went with Justin Tuck, Barry Cofield, Chris Canty and Mathias Kiwanuka to start on the front defensive line. Osi Umenyiora did sub in and work with first-teamers, sometimes with Kiwanuka on the other end.

• • •

RB Ahmad Bradshaw was initially reported by team as out of OTA but later the speedy running back took a snap and bursted through the line. He continues to work on a limited basis as he rehabs from surgery on his feet and an ankle.

• • •

RB Andre Brown says he is about a week away from doing everything full-speed. He got a lot of work during OTA and was seen cutting. Brown ruptured his Achilles during training camp last year.

• • •

DT Jay Alford, who tore knee ligaments in a preseason game last year, was back on the field in OTA. RB Brandon Jacobs (knee surgery), FB Madison Hedgecock (shoulder), C Shaun O’Hara (elbow), G Rich Seubert (shoulder), WR Mario Manningham (shoulder) and LB Gerris Wilkinson (wrist) all participated.

S Kenny Phillips (knee), WR Hakeem Nicks (wrist/toe), DT Rocky Bernard (shoulder) and S Michael Johnson (strained quad) did not participate.

Tuck says first-round pick Jason Pierre-Paul reminds him of someone he knows very well.

“Everybody on the football field looks like All-Americans and Pro Bowlers in shorts,” Tuck said. “But I’m excited about his athleticism and his length and he is a very explosive guy. I know Kiwi doesn’t want to hear this but he reminds me a lot of Kiwi when he first came in - very long, very rangy. That can bode well for what we want him to do this year.”

Defensive coordinator Perry Fewell continues to be a hit with his new players. He was running all over the field and yelling like he did at rookie minicamp.

“The way he attacks the meeting room, on the field, it is all consistent,” Tuck said. “He is the most vocal guy, he is running in and out of the huddles. That is very uplifting. When you see a coach that has that much passion about what he does, it is easy for players to get behind him and try to do the same thing.”

“Obviously we can’t tell how he calls defenses yet because everything in this practice is scripted. We can’t tell how many times we are going to be blitzing and how many times we are going to be in zones. But I can see his passion for the game.”

Ohio State TE Jake Ballard was excused from OTA because he still has classes to attend according to Coughlin.
