EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Nothing the New York Giants have done last year, this offseason or this preseason indicates they can win this game. Their offense looks like a mess, mainly because of questions about the line, and the Detroit Lions look like a tough matchup for them in the trenches. But somehow, I have this creeping feeling that things aren't what they seem. And in the NFL, when everyone seems convinced that something will happen, the opposite thing happens.
So I'm going out on my own limb here and picking the Giants to surprise with a road win in the opener by running the ball with Rashad Jennings and playing tight defense. It won't be pretty, but Eli Manning at least protects the ball and the Giants' first win comes much earlier than it did last year.
My prediction: Giants 17, Lions 14
