Osi Umenyiora recently said that Plaxico Burress is in terrific shape and ready to make a strong comeback.
Now Drew Rosenhaus, Burress’ agent, is saying the same thing after visiting with the former Giant wide receiver in prison on Saturday.
“He is doing great!” Rosenhaus tweeted. “He is running & lifting weights 5 days a week. He looks in terrific shape... He is in great spirits and is excited to be reunited with his family on June 6th.”
Burress is scheduled to be released on June 6 with good behavior. Umenyiora said during Super Bowl week that he believes Burress will have a comeback similar to Michael Vick’s and will shine with whomever he signs with. The defensive end also said the Giants haven't been the same without Burress.
Umenyiora is one of several Giants who would welcome Burress back. Quarterback Eli Manning added that a Burress return could be a good thing if the Giants feel the wideout is committed and focused.
“We talked at length about his future in the NFL & he can't wait to get back on the football field in 2011!” Rosenhaus said. “He is mentally & physically strong right now and is looking forward to the future! He has set some great goals for his life on and off the field. Get ready to see him do some amazing things this year in all areas!”
Giants general manager Jerry Reese says the team will investigate the possibility of bringing Burress back as he does in every free agent scenario. The Giants are loaded at wide receiver but Steve Smith will be coming off microfracture knee surgery and it could be a slow recovery process.
It remains to be seen how a potential lockout will affect Burress’ comeback. Should a work stoppage interrupt training camp or the season, the Giants might be the best spot for Burress to land since he is already familiar with the offense –- something Manning pointed out.
