Special teams assistant accepts LSU position

New York Giants special teams coach Tom Quinn will need to find a new assistant to help improve his unit after a very difficult season.

The Giants confirmed that Thomas McGaughey is leaving the Giants to accept the special teams coordinator/defensive line coach at LSU. McGaughey has been the special teams assistant coach since 2007 under Quinn.

There has not been a replacement hired yet. Head coach Tom Coughlin had decided not to make any changes to his staff after the season ended.

The special teams struggled last season with rookie punter Matt Dodge. The kickoff return team also finished 31st in the league with an average of 19 yards per return. The punt return unit tied Pittsburgh for last in the NFL with a 6.1 yards per return average.

The Giants did re-sign Domenik Hixon, who missed all of last season with an ACL injury. Hixon is expected to be fully recovered for this season.
