The New York Giants are trying to improve their special teams and they are looking to a former Jet and Patriot for help.
Larry Izzo -- a 14-year special teams specialist with the Dolphins, Patriots and Jets –- will be added to Tom Coughlin’s staff as the special teams assistant coach once the lockout ends. A source confirmed the hiring, which was first reported by the Newark Star-Ledger.
Izzo will replace Thomas McGaughey, who left earlier this year to take a position on the LSU coaching staff.
Izzo last played in 2009 for the Jets. He was placed on injured reserve that season with a herniated disk in his neck.
The special teams ace won three Super Bowls with the Patriots and appeared in three Pro Bowls as well. He should help a special teams unit that struggled last season with coverage at times. The Giants finished second-to-last in kickoff returns and tied for last in punt returns as well.
