Giants Camp Day 3: What's the 411?

8/1/2011

The third practice is in the books and the Giants are heading into their first day off already! Tom Coughlin poked some fun at the new CBA rules.

"You know what I said to the guys this morning? You guys have been here for a tremendous number of days, like three, and you are going to have a day off," Coughlin cracked. "I don’t think it has ever been done in the history of football."

Here’s the 411 from the evening practice and what we learned today:

OSI WATCH

Osi Umenyiora has been given permission to seek a trade and he says he’s annoyed that people are painting him as the bad guy for wanting a new deal or a trade when he has outperformed his contract. This is business as Umenyiora and some of his teammates have pointed out. Umenyiora mentioned the bad side of the business with Shaun O’Hara and Rich Seubert being released and Brandon Jacobs taking a paycut.

And to understand how he feels, read what he says about another defensive end who just struck it rich in the link above.

WELCOME BACK AHMAD

Ahmad Bradshaw has agreed to re-sign with the Giants and will be able to practice starting on Thursday due to the transition rules.

The Giants backfield will be whole on Thursday when he and Jacobs take their first carries of camp.

MR. JONES

The Giants had a surprise visitor when injured safety Chad Jones and his girlfriend, Jade Newman, showed up to watch practice.

Jones was in New Jersey to have a physical and he reports the doctor was impressed and things are going well. Jones says he’s 70-percent back after last year’s gruesome car accident that nearly took his life (Mike Mazzeo will have a story up soon on ESPNNewYork.com). Here's his account back around the one-year anniversary of his long, grueling rehab and how he has had to battle mentally as well to keep his spirits up.

He is now running without the aid of the AlterG treadmill, which helps reduce gravity. His plan is still to make his comeback next season.

Jones was waived/injured today so that the Giants can place him on the reserve/non-football injury list. That basically means he will remain with the Giants this season.

MORE TRANSACTIONS

The Giants signed former TE Ben Patrick after the former Cardinal worked out for the team today. Coughlin said the move had no impact on Kevin Boss, who remains a free agent for now.

The team also waived/injured RB Martell Mallett, who appeared to hurt his knee at the end of Sunday's practice.

ARE WE TALKIN’ BOUT PRACTICE

WR Devin Thomas has had a nice start to camp so far, making a few more grabs, including a 50-yard reception… Another guy who has opened a few eyes is QB Ryan Perrilloux, who has shown a nice arm. He threw a 65-yard bomb to rookie WR Jerrel Jernigan, who made a sweet over-the-shoulder catch… CB Corey Webster looked sharp defensively in coverage… Justin Tuck says Linval Joseph could be the strongest guy on the team and he looks like a load so far. Fellow DT Marvin Austin has impressed Tuck and Coughlin with his balance and athleticism… Punter Matt Dodge has boomed some punts the first few days. But he dropped a punt snap tonight and heard a round of boos from the fans. The next punt? He crushed it... The Giants have been rotating their rookie linebackers with the third team. Greg Jones, Jacquian Williams, Mark Herzlich and Spencer Paysinger have gotten limited reps as third-teamers for now so it’s hard to gauge how they are doing at the moment. Jones said he’s giddy to be with the Giants. Williams looks as advertised, athletically raw and needs to bulk up but has some quickness. Herzlich has moved between outside linebacker and middle a bit and has split reps with Paysinger at times.
