Welcome to the morning entry. Today the Giants could get veterans like Brandon Jacobs, Mathias Kiwanuka, Ahmad Bradshaw and new center David Baas, among others, in the mix in practice if the CBA is finally done as expected.
We're also waiting to see what happens with Kevin Boss, who visited Oakland last night.
In the meantime, here's what former Giant captain Antonio Pierce had to say about the Osi situation.
Pierce visited his old team on Wednesday night and talked to several old friends and team employees while watching practice.
Pierce, now an ESPN football analyst, says he thinks the Giants and Osi Umenyiora need to part ways for the best.
“I don’t see it getting any prettier,” Pierce said. “Obviously this is a situation where Osi, he’s had enough of the New York Giants and everything that has been going on with these contracts and trades. I think it is just time for Osi to get a fresh start. You could sense yesterday that there was some frustration amongst a lot of people in that organization.”
The Umenyiora saga has taken a lot of twists and turns, none more bizarre than Wednesday’s drama when the Giants rescinded their permission given to Umenyiora’s agent to seek a trade for a first-round pick. Umenyiora met with GM Jerry Reese in the afternoon, when according to a source, Reese excused Umenyiora from practice to clear his head.
Umenyiora decided to attend practice and watch from the sideline to the surprise of many.
“This thing hasn’t been resolved yet,” Pierce said. “Osi wants to play ball and he wants to be paid to play ball at a very high price. I don’t think the Giants are going to give him that deal that he wants. And to me it would be in the best interest of everybody, you got an unhappy player in that organization in this time, in that Giants franchise, that they need to move forward with that and maybe let Osi go.”
If the Giants do not trade Umenyiora, who likely could continue to sit out practices, the situation will linger and become a distraction.
“Because you know why?” Pierce asked. “It’s in New York. The media is going to pound on these guys every day. Coach (Tom) Coughlin is going to have to answer these questions every day. Justin Tuck, Eli Manning, Osi himself, they are going to answer this question every day until it is resolved.”
