Camp preview: The QBs

July, 19, 2010
The New York Giants open camp in less than two weeks in Albany and there are many questions surrounding the Giants after last season’s 8-8 debacle. We’ll break down the roster, unit by unit, to whet your training camp appetite. Let’s start with the quarterbacks.

Unit: Quarterback

Depth Chart: Eli Manning, Jim Sorgi, Rhett Bomar.

On the Bubble: Bomar.

Player to Watch: Manning. Can he top 4,000 yards for the second straight season and improve upon his best statistical season this year?

Wild Card: Mike Sullivan. The new quarterbacks coach takes over for Chris Palmer after spending the previous six seasons as the wide receivers coach.

Analysis: It’s all about Eli. This is now his team more than ever and Manning is entering the prime of his career. At 29, Manning starts his seventh season after passing for career-highs of 4,021 yards and 27 touchdowns. Giants fans, though, may not want to see Manning top those numbers. Manning posted those stats during a season in which the running game sputtered badly and when the Giants played from behind in several games. The Giants are at their best when they play balanced and have a strong rushing attack. Still, Manning raised his level of play with a young receiving corps that can only get better. Manning has a new position coach, Sullivan, and a new backup in Jim Sorgi. The Giants hope Sorgi can help Manning grow even more after the backup served under Peyton Manning for the previous six seasons. Offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride says Sorgi is entrenched as the backup unless “some extraordinary thing happens.” Bomar showed some flashes during offseason training practices but he saw limited snaps behind Sorgi.
