Deon Grant returning to Giants

8/16/2011

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. –- The New York Giants have been searching for a third safety so they can continue to utilize their three-safety formation.

That search is over. Free agent Deon Grant is returning to the team, Giants coach Tom Coughlin said Tuesday.

Grant, 32, played all 16 games for the Giants last season after spending three years each in Carolina, Jacksonville and Seattle.

The Giants used Kenny Phillips, Antrel Rolle and Grant on the field often during passing situations last year, with success. During training camp, safeties coach Dave Merritt said the team was exploring the possibility of using cornerback Terrell Thomas as a third safety on passing situations.

But cornerback Prince Amukamara, the team's first-round pick, suffered a broken bone in his foot and backup defensive back Bruce Johnson suffered a season-ending Achilles injury, delivering a blow to the Giants' depth in the secondary.

Grant had 72 tackles and three interceptions last year. He will make a great tutor for backup safety Tyler Sash, who was drafted in the sixth round this year.
