Day four of our camp preview focuses on the tight ends.
Unit: Tight ends
Depth Chart: Kevin Boss, Travis Beckum, Bear Pascoe, Scott Chandler, Jake Ballard.
On the Bubble: Chandler, Ballard.
Player to Watch: Boss. The 6-6 tight end should be ready to go after minor surgery to alleviate pain in his ankle.
Wild Card: Beckum. The Giants would like to see more consistency out of their third-round pick from last year.
Analysis: The Giants should get more out of the tight end position. Boss and Beckum are two more weapons Eli Manning can use in the passing game if Boss can stay healthy and Beckum improves in camp.
Boss caught 42 balls for 567 yards and five touchdowns but took some serious shots last season while playing most of the year banged up. The only Giant who might absorb more punishing hits than Boss is Brandon Jacobs. After minor surgery on his ankle, Boss says he should be pain free this season and the Giants would be wise to utilize him as a big target for Manning.
The Giants took Beckum in the third round last year with visions of him wreaking havoc on defenses as a mismatch for linebackers to cover. He has great hands but needs to improve his consistency in route running and blocking according to offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride. If Beckum makes strides in camp, he can be a great asset for the Giants’ passing attack.
