We start the second week of our training camp preview with the focus on the Giants’ strength: the defensive line.
Unit: Defensive line.
Depth Chart: (DE) Justin Tuck, Mathias Kiwanuka, Osi Umenyiora, Jason Pierre-Paul, Dave Tollefson, Tommie Hill, Ayanga Okpokowuruk. (DT) Barry Cofield, Chris Canty, Linval Joseph, Rocky Bernard, Jay Alford, Nate Collins, Dwayne Hendricks.
On the Bubble: Hill, Okpokowuruk, Collins, Hendricks.
Player to Watch: Umenyiora. All eyes will be on the stiffest competition in camp between Umenyiora and Kiwanuka. Umenyiora has vowed to be a team player in camp but it remains to be seen what will happen if he doesn’t regain his starting job.
Wild Card: Perry Fewell. The new defensive coordinator has been brought in to salvage a defense that was devastated by injuries, controversy and opposing offenses. Fewell also has to keep all his pass rushers happy and there might not be enough snaps to spread around.
Analysis: The defensive line is the strength of the team and Fewell must find a way to restore the team’s pass rush in order for the Giants to succeed.
Umenyiora and Kiwanuka will wage a camp battle that could have a major impact on the defense. Umenyiora says the best player will start but if he believes he is the best player in camp and he doesn’t regain his starting job, there could be problems. Kiwanuka, entering the last year of his contract, also wants to start and will not surrender his spot easily.
The Giants strengthened an already deep defensive end position by taking Pierre-Paul with the 15th overall pick. He may see some snaps with Tuck, Umenyiora and Kiwanuka all on the field at the same time.
Canty is healthy again and could be a force inside alongside Cofield. Joseph, the second-round pick, has impressed with his size and athleticism and could be the rookie with the biggest impact this season. Alford is returning from injury as well and could be a factor.
