Steve Smith is activated and practices

August, 27, 2011
Tom Coughlin was under the initial belief that Steve Smith might not practice until early to mid-September.

But Smith participated in his first Eagles practice on Saturday according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Smith was activated off the physically unable to perform list and went through limited reps with his new team. This comes two and a half weeks after he signed with the Eagles on Aug. 10.

Coughlin said back then that the thought was that Smith would not be ready to return to practice for another four-to-six weeks after he was checked out by team doctors on a visit.

Smith, who underwent microfracture surgery last December, could potentially contribute to the Eagles early in the season now. Smith, who signed a one-year contract with the Eagles, is not eligible to start the season on the PUP list now that he has been activated.
