Thomas re-aggravated his twice-repaired right ACL early in training camp but the cornerback will apparently need more time to recover. Head coach Tom Coughlin thought there might be a “ray of hope” that Rogers could play again this season after discovering a blood clot after the preseason opener. Both veterans will not be able to play again this season.
The Giants trimmed their roster to 53 by also parting ways with veteran running back D.J. Ware, linebacker Greg Jones and wide receiver and fan favorite David Douglas. Cornerback Bruce Johnson (shoulder) was waived/injured and the team also placed safety Tyler Sash on the suspended/reserve list for the next four games after violating the NFL’s policy for performance enhancing substances.
The Giants had several tough cuts to make and decided to keep impressive youngsters like defensive ends Adewale Ojomo and Adrian Tracy and safety Will Hill on their active roster.
The Giants can designate an injured player as an injured reserve player that can come off IR after eight weeks on Tuesday. Defensive tackle Marvin Austin (back) is not being considered for that option from what I hear right now. And some of the players cut today may return to the practice squad.
Analysis: Brown and Scott beat out Ware but Giants have to find somebody as the third-down back to protect Manning. How fast can Wilson earn the coaching staff’s trust?
"There was good competition at that running back spot," Tom Coughlin said. "Andre Brown and Da'Rel Scott have both earned the right and they've both proven that they can be special teams contributors as well, which is what we were looking for."
Analysis: ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter reported that there were rumblings of the Giants looking to potentially trade for an offensive lineman. Perhaps they could still look to add a body in the next few days. But Coughlin hopes to see Beatty’s back hold up in practice this weekend.
Analysis: I’m a little surprised that Thomas was cut but Kuhn certainly earned a spot. Ultimately, the Giants wanted to keep Tracy and Ojomo and I think it is a good thing they were able to keep both. A healthy Austin will help.
Analysis: Jones loses the battle in the crowded linebackers unit. Coughlin made it clear this was not an easy decision.
"There were a lot of numbers issues (at different positions) and you can't keep everybody," Coughlin said. "You don't like to let a guy go that has played and contributed and done the things that Greg has done. However, the unfortunate part about it is you only have so many spots."
Analysis: The Thomas move is the big one here. The Giants will need Amukamara to step up when his high ankle sprain heals. In the meantime, Coe and Tryon have to be solid while Hosley progresses. Hill makes the active roster after an impressive preseason. Defensive coordinator Perry Fewell likes Brown, who gives the team a veteran safety. But when Sash returns from suspension, the Giants will have a decision to make.
