Steppin' to the AM: TC not slowing down
By Ohm Youngmisuk
The boys at ESPN New York 98.7 FM stopped by Giants training camp on Thursday.
Tom Coughlin has looked as energized as ever at Giants camp this summer.
Michael Kay and Don La Greca interviewed Jerry Reese and asked the GM if Tom Coughlin is slowing down at all at age 66.
Reese told them a story about how he was looking for Coughlin one day at the facility.
"I said, 'Anybody seen Coach?'" Reese recalled. "They said go out to the fieldhouse. I went out there and he is running 100-yard sprints. He's not slowing down at all. He has tremendous energy and has got tremendous passion."
Of course, it is in Reese's and co-owner John Mara's best interest to be prepared for when Coughlin does decide to leave the game. Reese said the Giants do have "short lists" but that "we haven't talked about Tom retiring really because actually there really isn't nothing to talk about."
Having covered Coughlin for the past several seasons, I can honestly say he is more energetic than many people 30 years younger than him. I don't see TC hanging up his whistle anytime soon, barring unforeseen circumstances. And that's a good thing for the organization, if you ask me.
The sked: The Giants are off today as they travel to Pittsburgh for the preseason opener on Saturday night against the Steelers.
In case you missed it: One position to keep an eye on Saturday is defensive tackle, where the Giants loaded up in the offseason in an effort to stop the run. Justin Tuck hates to say it, but he knows somebody good is going to get cut due to the numbers game.
I am very curious to see if the Giants can keep five or six defensive tackles on the final roster. And what will happen with Marvin Austin, the team's second-round pick in 2011? Reese typically doesn't give up on high picks that quickly.
Tuck's back is tight -- we still aren't sure whether he will play Saturday. I'm thinking the Giants keep their defensive captain out for precautionary reasons. Chris Snee and Terrell Thomas will not play. And Justin Pugh (concussion) likely won't be cleared until next week.
