The NFL announced its compensatory draft picks Monday, and the New York Giants added an extra fifth-round pick in this year's draft. The pick will be the 34th of the fifth round and the 174th overall pick in the draft.

This brings the Giants' total number of draft picks back to the original seven. They traded their seventh-round pick to Carolina for linebacker Jon Beason during the 2013 season.

Compensatory picks are awarded based on a complicated formula that factors in the number and quality of free agents lost and signed during the previous offseason. Last offseason, the Giants lost tight end Martellus Bennett, linebacker Chase Blackburn, wide receiver Domenik Hixon and defensive end Osi Umenyiora to free agency and signed kicker Josh Brown, safety Ryan Mundy and tight end Brandon Myers. The difference between quality added and quality lost in the 2013 offseason resulted in an extra pick at the end of the fifth round, per the league's formula.

The Giants are one of 13 teams to receive compensatory picks this year. The Ravens and the Jets each received four. The Falcons, Cowboys, Texans, Steelers and Rams each received three. The Bengals, Lions and Packers each received two, and the Giants, Patriots and 49ers each received one.
