Feb. 20:
Boys: Brooklyn/Queens quarterfinals
Loughlin 61, Molloy 51; Xaverian 62, St. Francis Prep 51
Feb. 21
Boys: No. 5 St. Raymond 81, No. 4 Cardinal Hayes 73: The third time was the charm for St. Raymond as the Ravens knocked off top-seeded Cardinal Hayes in the Archdiocesan semifinals. St. Raymond had been swept by the Cardinals during the regular season but got the most important victory of all with its win in the semifinals.
The Ravens trailed by four at the half and two entering the last quarter but rallied behind 19 fourth-quarter points from Larry Graves, who led his team with 21 ioverall. Shane Rector had 20 for fourth-seeded St. Raymond's (17-9), while Daniel Dingle had 14 and held Hayes (22-4) center Amadou Sidibe to just six points.
"I thought that we finally had our whole team healthy and we had some great wins so our confidence was high," St. Raymond coach Oliver Antigua said. "I think they ran into a hot team. We've won four teams and we've played great opponents and we had one of the toughest schedules to prepare us for these games."--(Matt Ehalt)
Boys: No. 10 Mount St. Michael 66, St. Peter's 47: In its first year moving up to the AA, Mount St. Michael will be playing for the Archdiocesan title after defeating St. Peter's in the semifinals. The third-seeded Mountaineers (20-6) were up five at the half and opened it up in the second half against St. Peter's (17-8).
Anthony Maestre and Malik Gill paced Mount with 17 each. It will host St. Raymond on Saturday for the Archdiocesan crown.
"It's a great feeling," Mount coach Thomas Fraher said. "The kids played hard. This Class A, Class AA nonsense that's been asked about, it's a basketball games. The kids are good basketball players and they have a chance to win and the kids handled it real well."--(Ehalt)
Boys: St. Anthony (N.J.) 51, No. 6 Lincoln 45: Lincoln hung tough with the mythical national champions but fell short in a tough road game. The Railsplitters (17-9) were within three with two minutes left but saw some calls go the other way and missed some opportunities to capitalize, according to head coach Dwayne "Tiny" Morton. Still, the coach liked his team's resolve.
"We were definitely pleased with the effort," Morton said. "I hope they remember this effort going forward."
Lincoln received a boost as Isaiah Whitehead returned to the lineup and played his usual minutes. Morton said Whitehead was still bothered by his ankle but said that he showed flashes of being 100 percent in the final quarter. He has been suffering from a left ankle sprain.--(Ehalt)
Feb. 22
Boys: Bishop Loughlin 74, No. 1 Christ the King 67: Bishop Loughlin pulled the huge upset in the Brooklyn/Queens semifinals as it knocked off the defending champion in top-seeded Christ the King on Wednesday night.
The No. 5 Lions are back in the final for the second time in the past three seasons
"Everybody was overlooking our guys," Loughlin coach Edwin Gonzalez said. "We're a hungry team that lost to Christ the King twice in close games. It's great for the program and the kids. We got eight young sophomores and they're a forced to be reckoned with. I can't say enough for these kids."
He added: "The kids are very proud of themselves. They are working hard and very proud. We played 24 scrimmages but now it's the challenge. We were down at one point in this game but we continued to play and it was great for the kids."
Boys: No. 8 Holy Cross 63, Xaverian 55: Holy Cross is back to the Brooklyn/Queens finals for the second straight year after beating Xavverian for the third straight time this season. The second-seeded Knights pulled away in the fourth quarter to defeat No. 3 Xaverian.
Marquise Moore led Holy Cross with 21 points and 12 rebounds while Will Davis and Mairega Clarke each had 12 points.
"It's nice," Holy Cross coach Paul Gilvary said of getting back to the title game. "It's a nice accomplishment for the kids. You don't get to play for the championship too often and they have that opportunity on Friday and I'm sure they'll be looking forward to it."
Feb. 24
Girls: No. 4 Molloy 63, JFK 45: Molloy completed a nice week before the playoffs start as it defeated JFK on Friday night. Molloy trailed 20-14 after the first quarter but took control of the game from there. The Lady Stanners were led by 18 points from Carolyn Gallagher, 10 points from Sarah Duryea and 10 rebounds from Nyasha Irizarry.
Molloy (17-8) earlier in the week beat Christ the King to secure the No. 3 seed in the Brooklyn/Queens tournament.
"Good momentum (for the playoffs)," coach Scott Lagas said in a text. --(Ehalt)
