GREENBURGH, N.Y. -- Rangers forward Chris Kreider (bone chip) had a light skate Wednesday morning at the team's training facility, his first since an MRI revealed he had a bone chip in his ankle. The 21-year-old isn't sure if he will continue to skate each day as he has to see what plans the team's training staff for him. He's missed the team's last three games, with one absence coming as a healthy scratch.

"Better every day," Kreider said.

Kreider originally had been diagnosed with a bone bruise, but an MRI on Jan. 25 revealed he had the bone chip. He's listed as day-to-day, although coach John Tortorella said it wasn't that serious an injury. Kreider suffered the bone chip while playing with the Connecticut Whale (AHL) during the lockout.

Tortorella said recently he has no idea when Kreider will begin skating again, but the team could use him back as fellow forward Ryan Callahan is going for an MRI on Wednesday after suffering a left shoulder injury on Tuesday night. The Rangers could be down two forwards for Thursday's game vs. Pittsburgh.

"Regardless of the situation I want to be out there, I want to be playing," Kreider said.

After exploding for seven points in the playoffs last season, his first time playing in the NHL, Kreider got off to a slow start this year with zero points in his first three games. Tortorella had been critical of Kreider's play during that time, putting him on the bench against Philadelphia.

While the bone chip in his ankle would be an easy scapegoat for his slow start, Kreider wasn't sure that was the root of his problems.

"I don't know, that's hard to say," Kreider said. "Obviously it's an injury, but everybody is playing through something."

With Kreider out, the Rangers have received quality play from the recently acquired Benn Ferriero. He's played more than eight minutes in each of the last two games.
