Defenseman Matt Gilroy will make his season debut tonight against Pittsburgh as the Rangers are short staffed due to injuries to Ryan Callahan (shoulder) and Chris Kreider (ankle). Goalie Henrik Lundqvist will also be in goal for the seventh straight time to begin the season.
Gilroy provides some flexibility as he can also be used on offense, if needed. With Gilroy up, fellow defenseman Stu Bickel will move to the fourth line. Bickel practiced with that line Wednesday, as the team has to make changes with Callahan sidelined for up to two weeks.
Head coach John Tortorella said Jeff Halpern will have to handle some situational play in the third period in Callahan's absence. Halpern's primarily a faceoff specialist and has gotten off to a slow start, but Tortorella expects him to help the team in a lot of ways once he gets going.
