Defenseman Dan Girardi, who missed Tuesday's game against the Devils with a nebulous "banged up" classification, did not practice with the Rangers Wednesday. It remains unclear whether he will be available to play Thursday against the Islanders at Madison Square Garden.

Although it was an optional skate, most guys were on the ice at the team's training center in Westchester and Girardi was one of a handful of players (including Brad Richards, Marc Staal and Arron Asham) who did not.

Coach John Tortorella did not provide an update on Girardi or any indication as to how long he will be out. He was also cagey in answering whether it was a team decision or Girardi's own.

"Whatever happened needed to happen," he said.

Girardi is regarded as one of the true workhorses of the Rangers team. The 28-year-old also has a reputation for playing through injury; he had played all 82 games in three of the previous four seasons.
