Source: Rangers likely out on DeKeyser

3/26/2013

College free agent Danny DeKeyser and agent Don Meehan will huddle in Toronto on Tuesday to field offers from a number of NHL clubs interested in signing the defenseman, but the New York Rangers will not be among the teams making an in-person pitch, a source told ESPNNewYork.com.

Although the Rangers had interest in the Western Michigan University standout, they are not considered among the handful of teams in the mix to land DeKeyser and are instead focusing their efforts elsewhere. The team is in the process of bringing in forwards Mats Zuccarello and Jesper Fast from overseas.

The Detroit Red Wings are widely believed to be the front-runners to land DeKeyser. The natve of Clay Township, Mich., played youth hockey with Red Wings assistant GM Jim Nill's son, Trevor, and played under Jeff Blashill at WMU as a freshman; Blashill now coaches the Grand Rapids Griffins, the Red Wings' minor-league affiliate.

The Rangers thought they had a better chance to sign free-agent defenseman Andrej Sustr, who participated in the team's development camp in the summer of 2011, but they lost out to Tampa Bay.
