One interesting unrestricted free agent to monitor?

Veteran center Danny Briere.

A source told that the Islanders have interest in the 35-year-old forward, who was recently bought out by the Philadelphia Flyers.

What is not immediately clear is how receptive Briere would be to joining the Islanders. With a surprisingly competitive series against the Pittsburgh Penguins in Round 1 of the playoffs this year, the Islanders showed they are on the upswing with plenty of young offensive talent, but Briere might be keen on signing on with a team that is ready to win immediately.

Briere, 35, had a down year in a lockout-shortened 2013 season with six goals and 16 points in 34 games for Philadelphia, but he has amassed 286 goals and 373 assists in 847 career games.

The last two years of Briere's eight-year, $52 million deal was bought out last week by the Flyers. He will be free to test the market when the free agency period begins Friday.
